FRANK D. FITZGERALD, the thirty-fourth and thirty-sixth governor to serve Michigan, was born in Grand Ledge, Michigan on January 27, 1885. His education was attained at the Grand Ledge High School, and at the Ferris Institute in Big Rapids. Fitzgerald entered into a career in public service in 1913, serving as clerk of the Michigan House of Representatives, as well as serving as clerk of the Michigan State Senate, a position held six years. He also was the deputy secretary of state from 1919 to 1923, served as a member of the Republican State Central Committee from 1925 to 1926, was secretary of the Republican State Central Committee from 1929 to 1930, and served as the secretary of state from 1931 to 1934. Fitzgerald next secured the Republican gubernatorial nomination, and was elected governor by a popular vote in 1934. During his tenure, the budget was balanced; and the consolidation of state agencies was promoted. After running unsuccessfully for reelection, Fitzgerald left office on January 1, 1937. One year later he won reelection to the governorship, and was sworn into office on January 1, 1939. However, a little over two months into his term, Governor Fitzgerald passed away. He was buried in the Oakwood Cemetery in Grand Ledge, Michigan.
