FREDERIC H.PARKHURST, the fifty-second governor of Maine, was born in Unity, Maine on November 5, 1864. His early education was attained in the public schools of his native state. In 1887, he earned his law degree from the Columbian Law School in Washington, D.C. After passing the bar and establishing a practice in Bangor, Parkhurst went into the leather goods business with his father. He entered politics in 1893, serving as president of the Bangor Common Council. He also served as a member of the Maine House of Representatives from 1895 to 1896 and 1899 to 1902, was the commissary-general on Governor John F. Hill’s staff from 1901 to 1904, and served as a member of the Maine State Senate from 1907 to 1908. Parkhurst won the 1920 Democratic gubernatorial nomination, and then went on to win the general election by a popular vote. He was sworn into office on January 5, 1921. A little less than a month into his term, Governor Frederic H. Parkhurst passed away suddenly on January 31, 1921.
