Jack Milton Fields Jr. was born on February 3, 1952. He is an American businessman and a former Republican congressman. He represented a district based in Houston, Texas, in the U.S. House of Representatives. He served eight terms from 1981 to 1997.

Early life

Fields was born in Humble, Texas, near Houston. He graduated from Humble High School in 1970. He earned a bachelor’s degree in 1974 and a law degree in 1977 from Baylor University and Baylor Law School in Waco, Texas. After becoming a licensed lawyer in Texas in 1977, he worked as a lawyer and also as a vice president in his family’s business until 1980.

Congressional career

In 1980, when he was 28 years old, Fields was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives. He won by a small number of votes and became the first Republican to represent that district in 83 years. After district boundaries changed, the area became more Republican, and he was reelected seven more times with little opposition.

In 1994, Republicans gained control of the House. Fields became chairman of a subcommittee focused on telecommunications and finance. He helped write several major laws related to securities markets and telecommunications.

1993 Senate election

In 1993, Fields ran in a special election for the U.S. Senate after the seat became vacant. There were 24 candidates, but he did not receive enough votes to continue in the race.

After Congress

Fields chose not to run again in 1996. He started two companies: one that worked with government relations in Washington, D.C., and another focused on international trade in Texas. He also served on business and charity boards. In 2004, a post office in Kingwood, Texas, was renamed in his honor.

Fields joined the company Insperity as a director in 1997. In 2009, he earned about $121,000 for that role.

Personal life

Fields is married to Lynn Fields. He has two daughters, Jordan and Lexi, and a stepson named Josh Hughes.
