JAMES F. HINKLE was born in Franklin County, Missouri, on October 20, 1864. His education was attained at the University of Missouri. After moving to New Mexico in 1885, Hinkle established a successful business career, with holdings in the ranching and banking industries. He first entered politics in 1891, serving as a member of the Lincoln County Board of Commissioners, a position he held for two years. He also served as a member of the New Mexico House of Representatives from 1893 to 1896; was a member of the New Mexico Territorial Senate in 1901; and served as a member of the Lincoln County Board of Equalization from 1901 to 1911. From 1904 to 1906 he served as the mayor of Roswell; and from 1912 to 1917 he served in the New Mexico State Senate. Hinkle next secured the Democratic gubernatorial nomination, and was elected governor by popular vote on November 7, 1922. During his tenure, a World War I veteran’s property tax exemption was sanctioned. After completing his term, Hinkle retired from politics. He continued to stay active in his various business interests. Governor James F. Hinkle passed away on March 26, 1951 in Roswell, New Mexico.
