STANLEY CALEF WILSON was born in Orange, Vermont. After graduating from Tufts University, he studied law and began the practice of his profession first in Montpelier and then in Chelsea, Vermont. He was a director of numerous business and banking institutions, among them the National Bank of Orange County, Hartford Savings Bank and Trust Company, Brocklebank Granite Company, Green Mountain Mutual Fire Insurance Company, and the Orange County Creamery Corporation. Prior to being elected governor, he served as State’s Attorney for Orange County, state representative, Superior Court Judge, state senator, and Lieutenant Governor. As governor, Wilson favored better working conditions for farmers and better prices for farm products. During his gubernatorial administration, a state income tax became law, and highways were placed under state control. Wilson was also successful in securing a highway beautification program. After serving two terms as governor, he retired to his farm in Chelsea.
