Matt Woods proudly serves District 5 in the Alabama State Senate, which includes all of Walker, Fayette, and Lamar Counties along with portions of Tuscaloosa and Jefferson Counties. A life-long resident and small business owner in Walker County, Senator Woods was elected to the Senate during a special election in 2025. Prior to serving in the Senate, he served as a member of the Alabama House of Representatives from 2022-2025.

Senator Woods is a 2000 graduate of Oakman High School. He served as an ambassador and S.G.A president of Bevill State Community College, graduating in 2002. He earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Auburn University in 2004.

An active member of his community, Senator Woods and his wife Brandi, started a local non-profit, Hope After Loss Organization (HALO) after the loss of their first child. He served as the chairman of the Chamber of Commerce of Walker County and was named, “Volunteer of the Year,” in 2014. Senator Woods has served as a board member for the Alabama Independent Automobile Dealers Association and in 2018 he was appointed to serve as the 4th Congressional District Board Member of the Alabama Community College System.

During his time of public service, Senator Woods has been awarded the Alabama Republican Party, “Defender of Freedom Award” for his work to protect children from exploitation and encourage transparency in education. Senator and Mrs. Woods have a teenage daughter, Camden, who attends public school. They are members of the Parrish Church of Christ.
